When I speak about mastering the art of cadence I am not speaking about simply writing a “schoolbook cadence” but about understanding the principles of musical conclusions and clear statements of a musical thought. Observe how well M. Giaccino does finish this movement of Medal of Honor (The Radar Train). This cadence is at the same time conclusive and open: it is a very clear signal to end the music, but also a very clear signal that things are still going to be developed in the next movements. The harmonic technique here is one that i like very much:
1.Abrupt modulation OUT of the main key of the music or in relation to the previous section.
2. The recap of the main motive of the soundtrack gives comprehensibility to this abrupt change. The dark reappearence of a motive that is originally a major motive and that is the theme of the whole story gives a powerful dramatic effect.
This mastery of conclusions and rhetoric organization of the parts of the form is not so easy as it appears to be in some harmony books, and is the condition for a COM-position: you only have a com-position when you have distiguished parts harmonizing as a whole.
