Despite I do not hold my self as an “orchestrator” I had opportunity to study for a while with one of the great theorists of orchestration alive (Etrgl Sevsay) however the most important knowledge I acquired about the topic let be resumed in a french book about the symbolism of orchestration that I read before entering this uncreative world called university. My French was bad, but my absorption of the essential insights of that book was big.
I really want to find this book again. Maybe gonna ask the teacher, or maybe you know it?!
The other crucial component of my education in this topic – besides hearing music – is resumed here: playing orchestral scores at the piano for ca 6 years! Doesn’t matter how badly…Not because of the analysis, or because of the prima-vista performance, but because this is just a CONDITION for analysis of orchestration, and also because it affects your sense of “orchestrational espace”: you develop confidence in your vocabulary.
Another component is the experience as organist. Let’s talk later about this!
