PHILOSOPHY FOR COMPOSERS

Finally I can announce the first breadcrumbs of almost 20 years struggling to understand this question:

WHAT IS WISDOM, IN MUSICAL COMPOSITION?

This is what I want now to expand further with you in this absolute exclusive and unique offer for music composers, where I share and develop the most important thoughts I can mention in a systematic and profound course outline.

PHILOSOPHY OF MUSIC

HISTORICAL PART

Here, we introduce the concept of Philosophy for Composers and the Philosophy of Music - as a discipline of music theory and musicology - vs. as an autonomous philosophical discipline. In this section, we introduce the core aesthetic paradigms and learn the basic facts relevant to the philosophy of music, founding a basis for the systematic part.

SYSTEMATIC PART

This part is the “a priori” part, the properly philosophical, and where I present some potentially original ideas of mine relevant to problems mentioned before. I also am going to reveal new problems... So: be psychologically prepared!

PRACTICAL PART

This part focuses practical conclusions based on the previous sections of the course. It is about the "composer's life", the habits, the idea of "professional composer" and the practical aspects of the musical creation today. My goal is to provide a conceptual instrumentarium to understand and navigate the complex world of music today and in the future, fostering creativity and empowering wiser decisions in your musical journey.

COURSE ORGANIZATION

  • I am still deciding things and updating the organization. Please come back soon to check, or ask me on Patreon chat.

WAITING LIST

  • Record one video talking to camera without a script about: your idea about philosophy, your idea about the relation between musical composition and philosophy, which questions you value the most, and your expectations with this course. Send this video using the form below attaching a Google Drive link (enable access!).
  • Emanuel M. Fróes has degrees in Philosophy from University Paris-Lodron Salzburg - and Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. At Mozarteum University he majored with specialisation in philosophy of music. Emanuel has one international publication and presentations about Kierkegaard ; he also wrote academic works in music theory on the concept of Musical Logic in Schoenberg . His Master Thesis about the Concept of Meaning in Existential-Phenomenological Perspective got interrupted due to Lockdowns and lack of personal ressources. In Vienna Emanuel taught a course of History of Music from philosophical perspective focusing on the immanent - but still hermeneutic - development of the musical artworks along History. His views on music are deeply supported by a commited study of Aristotle, Quintilianus, Hegel, Edmund Husserl, Dahlhaus, and De La Motte. In 2024 Emanuel presented some elements of his Theory of Musical Appreciation (still in rudimentary form) a theory that builds the core of the final part of this course, but also his pedagogy of the composition in general.
