Common Film Scoring Mistakes That Might Lead to Missed Opportunities with Serious Film Directors and GREAT Stories

  • This post outlines critical errors aspiring film composers frequently make. These errors hinder progress and lead to project setbacks. The discussion explains the nature of these mistakes and their impact on the final product or client relationships.
  • Critical Mistakes to Address:
  • Overuse of Harmonic Recipes: Reliance on formulaic harmonic progressions can lead to predictable and unoriginal scores. This approach often prioritizes quick assembly over genuine musical invention.

  • Lack of Cohesion in Craftsmanship: Composers may apply advanced techniques (e.g., “big orchestrator” sounds from YouTube tutorials) without mastering foundational elements. This results in inconsistent quality where one section sounds polished, but another demonstrates basic deficiencies.

  • Inability to Improvise Under Pressure: A lack of improvisational skill can impede rapid creative problem-solving. This limits the ability to generate musical ideas quickly and adapt to tight deadlines, a common requirement in film production.

  • Delivering Incomplete Demos: Presenting demos that require the director to “imagine” the final result is a common error. This includes delivering unpolished MIDI mockups or relying on notation alone. Such demonstrations fail to communicate the complete artistic vision to non-musicians.

  • Misunderstanding the Role of Silence: Not knowing when to not compose. For this a good idea of film scoring theory, knowing more about stories, and analysis of film scores helps.

  • Over-Complicating Simple Scenes: Over-scoring or adding excessive musical information.

  • Ignoring Dialogue Frequencies: Composing music that clashes with or masks dialogue.

  • Poorly Prepared Mockups: Submitting demos that sound unprofessional, despite good ideas.

  • Lack of Clear Communication with Directors: Failing to translate musical concepts into cinematic terms.

  • Lack of Character: you are too generic, you don’t help the director making his story memorable. You don’t know in which sensible points of the music you SHOULD  be bold and in which ones you need to lay back using standard techniques. This means, also in the task of  being more conventional you fail ; )

FAQ

🟦 What if I do not have time to practice regularly?

✅ If there is no other time, we practice in the lessons. If the practice in the lessons requires specific prerequisites, we focus on theoretical topics such as analyzing scores, audios, or music in movies. For MIDI mockup, you start something from scratch, or you watch me solve a problem specifically related to your learning needs. For Eartraining, active practice is required. For Harmony on Piano, we can exercise more during the lesson or you watch me do. For Analysis, Philosophy of Music / Music History, we undertake deep analysis and text reading without requiring previous preparation. HOWEVER: YOU SHOULD PRACTICE AND STUDY AS BEST AS YOU CAN! This is YOUR DUTY AS A FUTURE PROFESSIONAL. Otherwise, consider that you might not be in the right profession!

🟦 I cannot commit to all Lesson-Courses. Which discipline should I learn first?
