HOW TO USE GOOGLE DRIVE WHILE NOT USING IT?

— — CLOUD ENSHITFICATION — — Typical digital era hell. I stopped using Google Drive app because it conflicts with a complex audio system.

Now I try to download a folder.

You would expect that 1) you get same folder, but zipped or 2) the download is split in small part but each one has a coherent name

What he does: he splits the folder many times in zip files, DUPLICATING on each copy the SAME folder structure BUT with missing files. Basically, it makes me lose a day merging all files back into one single folder as before. The only reason why i used this is to make access to students easier.

Google Drive forces large folders into multiple 2GB ZIP archives. It often does this mid-folder, resulting in some files being in “Zip A” and others in “Zip B”.

To maintain paths, Drive often recreates the entire folder hierarchy inside every single ZIP file, even if a folder only contains one of your files in that specific archive.

The zipping process frequently times out or fails to include certain files without notifying you, leaving you with an incomplete set of data.

Most browsers treat these split archives as “multiple file downloads” and may block subsequent ZIPs after the first one, leading to missing chunks

Summary:

  1. It splits MID-FOLDER (file A in Zip1, file B in Zip2)
  2. Each ZIP recreates FULL folder paths, even for single files
  3. No error reporting when files silently vanish
  4. Browser download managers block subsequent ZIPs

THE FIX

Since I stopped inviting betrayers for coffee, and don’t go out on friday’s paying drinks to others anymore, I could afford a second computer that is almost like a Batcomputer: so I consider using this one for Google Drive downloads. In this computer Google Drive App is active.

I download files in this computer 2 and drag into computer 1 using the Screen Sharing app (that comes with your mac).

Since there is one computer now only for this, it also makes easier to have all frequently used files downloaded into it. The downloaded files are going to appear with a green sign while your app is set to “sync mode” — not paused!

Still, despite some single great advantages for the “average user” (like the Gemini integration) Google Drive is specially bad in the most basic feature of any data management: showing folder size! And there is no way this is not by design, in order to make you consume more space.

Without clear size visibility, users:
• Underestimate their usage
• Hit quotas unexpectedly
• Upgrade storage plans
• Consume more than planned

Beyond this, for users of Logic Pro the app is absolutely a source of anxiety: even when you use it just for long term arquive, not streaming, it shows your project FILES as folders. This is very misleading and creates a sense of loss of control of what is truly going on. A fix for this would be a settings that says:attach icon X to files ending with .yx

THE REVOLUTION

Meanwhile many community made apps are proven to be highly flexible, customizable, intelligent, and SUPERIOR. But somehow we still depend on big techs here and there.

This is a big example of ENSHITFICATION. And we need to fight back.

You do this with:

  1. Knowledge and Intelligence : pointing out what is evidently STUPID

2. Courage: with knowledge and intelligence you perceive the TRAPS and get confidence to say that this is a BULLSHIT.

3. Support: you should support those who have the courage you don’t have
