  • Aural Analysis & Understanding:Ear training sharpens the ability to perceive and understand musical sounds, including melodic clarity, harmonic insight, and rhythmic mastery. Don’t find that John Williams score? Learn by hearing!
  • Technique:Composers can audiate (hear internally) melodies before writing them down, experiment with harmonic progressions, and develop a more intuitive sense of rhythm and tempo.
  • Own voice: Did you ever watch that video that says you should develop your own voice? They did not tell you the truth yet: you develop your own voice when you master the musical material enough to go beyond the rules while still remaining musical and comprehensible. Not sure if you should double the leading tone of that chord? Ear-training gives you opportunity to build confidence about your own taste and relationship with the musical material beyond the stablished styles of music.
  • Faster Workflow:Ear training allows composers to grasp musical concepts more quickly, leading to faster and more efficient compositional processes. This is specially true when working with daws with limited features regarding notation.
  • Increased Creativity and Freedom:By developing a stronger understanding of musical elements, composers can explore new ideas and express themselves more freely.
  • Enhanced Communication:Ear training helps composers communicate musical ideas more effectively with collaborators and audiences.
  • Improved Memory and Auditory Skills:Ear training develops aural memory, making it easier to recall and reproduce melodies and chord progression when improvising or playing repertoire (source: https://www.jstor.org/stable/40319208)

Eartraining I characterize as a set of assisting skills that hit the core of musical intuition necessary of any creative activity, principal for improvisation. provides composers with a deeper understanding of music, enabling them to compose memorable pieces of music more intuitively using paper and pencil or a DAW without score editor.

It enhances their ability to recognize, reproduce, and manipulate musical elements like pitches, intervals, chords, and rhythms, ultimately leading to richer and more expressive compositions.  One of the most overlooked benefits of eartraining for composers is how it helps to quickly grasp the complexity of orchestral music.
