This helps to practice and answer themes, especially the slow and periodic ones.
– Use for this a clear theme with basic functional harmonic structure, like the one above by Frank Sawyer.
- Consider only the antecedent (the part until the first cadence/ending)
- Answer the theme each time starting from a) another position: the third, the fifth, the octave. b) prioritize the main functions in slight variation (functional economy = search for T,S,D)
- Use the same motives to your advantage ! The new position will take care of the rest
- Repeat the whole, trying different alternatives (Ritornello principle). The cyclic structure of the exercise will help you get into flow.
